Otis O’Solomon – Master Poet

O‘Solomon and The Watts Prophets released their latest cd in 1997 on Polygram Records entitled, “When the 90’s Came.” O’Solomon had his poem “Hey World” recorded by Ziggy Marley, Bob Marley‘s son. During the 70’s, he and The Watts Prophets recorded his classic “Beautiful Black Girl,” (Black Woman) with Quincy Jones. Also, O’Solomon and The Watts Prophets have published two books of original poetry, the first entitled “The Rising Sons of Wisdom & Knowledge” and “Poetic Reflections”, their second book. Otis O’Solomon… says he was a poet at birth. He was born and raised in Alabama, where he was first energized by the Poetic Spirit and wrote his first poem. However, Los Angeles is where he first started to seriously pursue a career as a professional poet / performer and writer.

O‘Solomon, an original Watts Prophet, emerged out of The Watts Writers Workshop, where he later served as Poetry Creative Writing Instructor / Motivator for several years. In fact, he was the workshop’s last instructor and continued to serve in that capacity long after the workshop’s demise. O’Solomon was also elected minority representative for the Writers Guild of America(West). He has served as Master / Poet teacher for St. Paul’s Council of Arts and Sciences Program and spent several years as Urban Coordinator of (California’s) Poetry In The Schools Program (Los Angeles).

O‘Solomon had his poetry featured in the movie “Higher Learning.” He has had his works sampled by some of the Top Rap Artists of today… and, in collaboration with the Los Angeles Black Business Expo and Trade Show, under the auspices of his own company, Artistic Heart, O’Solomon presented the Poetry Cafe, a smorgasbord of continuous poetry, from opening until closing, every day of the expo.

During the 80’s, O’Solomon started Artistic Heart Music Publishing and Production Co. He also produced a series of poems known as (P.P.) Poster Poems. The series included “(P.S.I.) Positive Self Image,” “Music,” and Cards with inspirational messages. The line now includes “The Business Prayer,” the complete “Honesty” series, and “How to Overcome Challenges,” etc.

O‘Solomon, through his production company, has also produced a series of Poetry Concerts and staged a variety of solo performances. O’Solomon has performed his poetry at many major colleges, universities, performing art centers, clubs and other artistic venues throughout America (U.S.A.), Canada and Europe.

Currently, O’Solomon is promoting his latest project, an original book of poetry entitled, “Wake Up World.” Through a variety of events: book signings, book reviews, spoken word / poetry performances, etc., he continues to work with and tour with The Watts Prophets. O’Solomon also continues to work in the community, continues to write, continues to perform and continues to share his creative poetic results with the people doing his love and loving his doing, thanks to the Grace of God.
